Our Story - Twill Interiors
Our story is rooted in craft, guided by natural materials and shaped along side the clients we work with.
Twill Interiors began long before its name was ever spoken aloud.
It started with a young Jacqui Mitchell, who fell in love with the quiet power of materials while studying fashion in South Africa in the 1990s. A move to London opened the door to the world of interior design, and a new way of seeing how textures, layers and honest materials could tell stories that stand the test of time.
But it was when Jacqui met her builder husband that the creative and the practical truly found their home together. She retrained in interior design at the Chelsea College of Arts, combining a maker’s eye for detail with a deep respect for the realities of building spaces that work and last. Her early years designing in Queenstown and later in Tauranga were a true apprenticeship in balancing beauty and buildability — lessons that continue to anchor every project today.
In 2011, Twill Interiors was officially born, its name a nod to the subtle strength of a twill weave — a reminder that good design is layered, enduring and quietly confident. For Jacqui, every project is guided by a belief that spaces should feel as good on a busy Monday as they do on a lazy Sunday morning. Natural materials are at the heart of every decision — wool carpets that soften over time, timbers with visible grain, finishes that shift gently with the light. Trends are never chased. Instead, Jacqui favours the ‘voice that lingers,’ creating spaces that grow with you over decades, not seasons.
Today, Twill Interiors works across a range of homes and spaces throughout the Bay of Plenty and beyond, bringing together craft, practicality and a deeply human approach. There is always a careful balance: function never sacrifices beauty, and no detail is too small to consider. For Jacqui, the greatest privilege is being invited into a client’s life and asked to help make a house feel like home — whether it’s a beachfront bach, a family basecamp or a forever home for a new season of life.
As Twill has grown, so too has the team. Now, Jacqui is joined by Alex and Lizzy — talented interior designers who bring their own fresh ideas, curiosity and care to every project. With Alex’s eye for layered palettes and Lizzy’s thoughtful approach to creating spaces that truly reflect the people who live in them, the studio continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
Together, they share a belief that great design is never about spectacle — it’s about spaces with depth, integrity and a heartbeat. Every project is a collaboration — with each other, with trusted suppliers and, most importantly, with the clients who invite them in. This is our story so far — and we’re excited to see where it takes us next.

Testimonial - Client Story
Working with Jacqui and the team at Twill was an absolute pleasure and the outcome for our new home could not have been achieved without their input from the very first stages of design. Something I learnt from our last build was to get the right advice early and it has really paid off this time! Even before the plan was finlised, Jacqui helped refine our design and add important features. Our collaboration with Twill was an exciting part of the build process, it was awesome to see our ideas come to life and Jacqui worked with what we wanted in a way that has resulted in a beautiful home that we love to live in. Twill assisted with not only the design of the home, but all the interior decorating. Our brief was fulfilled beyond our expectation, and we are extremely grateful for the skill and care Twill took to turn our house into a home.
